Artificial Lighting Design

Project Brief

This project was also a group project and we have to pick a site for our study of artificial lighting. In this project, we have to determine the amount of general light needed for a space by using the Lumen Calculation Method and decided the right arrangement and lighting fixture that suit the space. The site that we have chosen is a restaurant called Manish Restaurant which makes Lebanese dishes and is located in São Paulo, Brazil. The space that we have decided to study on is the eating area.

LUMEN CALCULATION METHOD

Next, we calculate the number of general lights needed for the eating area to allow for activities to carry on there by using the lumen calculation method.

PROPOSED GENERAL LIGHT

The lighting that we have proposed for general lighting of the space is recessed light due to it can light up the space evenly and provide more coverage. The light is built into the ceiling and has a lumen of 660 with a colour temperature of 2600k and a CRI of 90+. These specifications of the chosen recessed light is great for the restaurant as the restaurant needed light that can help to express on creating the unique ambience of the restaurant.

OTHER TYPES OF PROPOSED LIGHTING

We have also decided to put some task lights in the space like pendant lights which can produce focus lighting for customers to see their food can drinks more clearly. Moreover, we have also decided to have a different type of lighting for the entrance so that the spotlight at the entrance can draw the attention of the potential customers and make it more visible to them. At last, we also planned to put candle lights on every tables that does not have pendant lights on it due to candle lights can provides just enough light for both parties to focus on the food and each other while dimming focus on any surrounding distractions.

FLOOR PLAN WITH PROPOSED LIGHTING

The arrangement is according to our findings in the lumen calculation for which we have divided the space into 6 rows of 10 with general lighting. And then, we take out some recessed lighting so that we can put in our task lighting.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

The circuit of the lighting is connected based on different areas and one circuit is connected with a maximum of 8 bulbs due to the prevention of circuit blowing up.

In this project, I was able to use my time management skill to plan my time to finish this project in a sufficient amount of time without rushing.

In this project, I was able to make use of my photoshop skill and create rendered photos of our proposed ideas to provide a clearer understanding for readers.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

I was able to communicate well with my groupmates by speaking out my opinions while also listening to my groupmates' opinions and when there are differences in opinions, I was able to provide my analyze on which ideas are the most suitable for our project.
