PROJECT 1a
Pre-Design Studies & Analysis
Project Brief
Project 1a requires students to work in groups to conduct a thorough investigation of the selected site, immersing themselves in its physical, social, and cultural context to “sense the place” and identify valuable components that will inform the design process. Using tools such as the townscape appraisal checklist, alongside references from key urban design and public space literature, students will analyze the site through observation, research, surveys, and interviews. The study will include precedent analysis of relevant projects to deepen understanding of potential programs and their impacts. The outcome is to develop a concise yet comprehensive site study that aligns with the theme of architecture with an impact, responding to the needs of people, place, and time, and establishing an informed strategy and program for the subsequent design phase.
